How I Chose My Topic
I chose the topic of the Columbian Exposition because many new technologies were presented. The innovation at the fair interested me because I like to see what incredible feats were happening in the late 1800’s during the Industrial Revolution. Technology was different one hundred years ago and I have also been to Chicago many times, so now I know the history of several of the buildings. Altogether, the Columbian Exposition is a very interesting topic because of all the firsts at the fair.
How I Conducted My Research
Most of my research was conducted online. I searched through an online newspaper database to find references to the fair from all over the U.S. I also had a few library books that were written about the fair. Some of my research was conducted at the Utah State Archives to find reports and books that Utahans had made during the fair. Mostly I looked for documents and other ideas that related to my topic and supported my thesis. Positive reviews about the fair, innovations that happened, and important events that influenced the future were what I was looking for.
How I Selected My Presentation Category and Created My Project
I chose to do a website as my presentation category because I have made websites before, and I enjoy working with computers. My project is based around the theme, “Exploration, Encounter and Exchange” so I created the website to embody all of those elements. I took into account while creating my project that the Columbian Exposition was a very cheerful event, so I made sure that my website represented the fair in an exciting way.
How My Project Relates to the NHD Theme
The Columbian Exposition relates to the National History Day theme because it exemplifies exploration, encounter, and exchange. The Chicago World's Fair, or Columbian Exposition, explored new ideas in technology like, the Ferris wheel or Tesla lighting the complete fair grounds with an alternating current. People from all around the world encountered new ideas, as well as exchanging their own. There were a lot of different encounters because almost fifty different countries participated in the World’s Fair. As well as countries many states participated, so it let citizens of America learn about the other places in the country. In the fair there was great exchanging of ideas. The Columbian Exposition relates to the three E’s of the theme.
